Oregon Therapist Jackie Curry offers compassionate, authentic support to Teens and Young Adults in and around Portland.

Hello!

I’m Jackie, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (which is just a fancy way of saying therapist). I’ve been serving teens and adults as a mental health therapist for more than ten years in (and around) Portland, Oregon.

My passion has always been in helping people through their life transitions, anxiety, depression, trauma, and other life challenges, but more than that, I am passionate about helping my clients design a life that works for them—a value I apply to my own life as well!

My training as a therapist and the life experiences I’ve endured have shaped the way I’ve learned to listen in the therapeutic space and have encouraged my passion for working with teens and adults who are just trying to figure it all out.

Working with clients from a strengths-based approach allows us to celebrate the areas where things are going well and use that energy to create change in other areas of life. My additional EMDR training and 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training certificate are powerful healing tools I also incorporate into my trauma-informed therapy practices.

What is therapy?

Therapy offers the opportunity for exploration of yourself, others, and the world. It provides a space to talk openly without judgment and to expand your perspective. Most importantly, therapy provides a space to heal from pain, find moments of peace and all around feel better (emotionally and physically).

I practice from a person-centered perspective, which means you’re always the core of the work we’re doing. I use a relational approach to build relationships because this is where change starts; in our moments of feeling safe and connected, we are allowed the opportunity to examine the emotional wounds and painful memories that have been so difficult to resolve.  Our therapeutic relationship will be built with authenticity, compassion, active listening, and even humor.

My approach to therapy

There isn’t one right way to ask for and receive support. For this reason, I have made sure that I remain open to learning new tools and techniques and bringing these to our therapy sessions. You are not a one-dimensional person, so I don’t want to be a one-dimensional therapist. Below you can learn a little about some of the pillars of my psychotherapy practice. They form the foundation of the work we’ll do together but, like you, I’m always learning and adding to the list of what I can offer.

  • Instead of creating a laundry list of tasks you have to do and changes you need to make, person-centered therapy keeps you at the heart of its every move. You want the freedom to talk about what you’re going through and find your next steps without being told what that should look like. I use a person-centered approach because I believe you are entitled to that. You deserve a space to seek clarity in a nonjudgmental way that holds you in a position of power in your own life.

In our sessions, we will work together to cultivate a space where you can be genuine, and in return, you can expect to receive empathy, and understanding and be met with positive regard.

  • For some types of trauma, talking things out doesn’t work. If you’ve found yourself frustrated or feeling retraumatized by talk therapy, we can explore EMDR as an alternative or supplementary option.

Using the brain’s own programming to target and rewrite traumatic memories, EMDR helps you to rapidly recover and reprocess the things you’ve been through to find relief from insomnia, nightmares, anxiety, panic attacks, PTSD, and other trauma-related difficulties.

  • Though psychotherapy and mental health begin with your thoughts and feelings, those things don’t sit in isolation from the rest of you. The way you move and integrate your thoughts and movements can help you to feel more in control of the way you experience the world within and around you.

For some people, bringing your whole body into your therapy practice can be beneficial. I am delighted to offer yoga and breathwork as part of your healing experience with me upon request.

Why I am a

virtual therapist

I offer therapy to ANYONE in the state of Oregon using a virtual platform, which means you can work with me from the comfort of your own space.  I love being able to support my clients to live the life they want while I’m on the other side of the screen doing the same. I am a practice-what-you-preach type of therapist, and I can tell you firsthand that boundaries, passion, and perseverance are necessary ingredients of a life well lived.

In our first session, I will ask you several questions such as:

What brings you to therapy?

Have you been in therapy before?

What do you hope to gain from our work together?

How will you know when you are done with therapy?

Together, we will explore your answers and then collaborate to identify therapy goals and that mountain top that we’re working toward.

Ready to get started?

Making the decision to start therapy isn't always easy, particularly when you feel exhausted, overwhelmed, and even hopeless. But, I assure you I will do my best to meet you with compassion and provide a safe space for you to talk openly and feel understood.

I invite you to contact me to schedule a free 15-minute consultation to ask any questions you have and to discuss your therapy goals. I look forward to hearing from you soon!
